Malayalam actors are always considered brilliant by other language film makers. Most of them have already proved their mettle in other language films. Let us check the list of some of Mollywood actors journey in neighboring states.
Mammootty gained attention in Tamilnadu with his straight Malayalam films ‘Oru CBI Dairykurippu’, ‘New Delhi’ and ‘Nair Saab’ doing great business in Tamilnadu. Soon he played lead roles in Tamilfilms ‘Mounam Sammadham’ (1990), K.Balachander’s ‘Azhagan’ (1991) and Mani Rathnam’s ‘Dhalapathy’ (1991). He had consistent hits in Tamil with ‘Kilipetchu Ketkava’ (1993), ‘Makkal Aatchi’ (1995), ‘Marumalarchi’ (1998), ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’ (2000) and ‘Aanandham’ (2001). Now he is back in Tamil with Ram’s ‘Peranbu’. Mammootty had successful dubbing films ‘Samrajyam’ and ‘Anashwaram’ in Andhra Pradesh and most of his action films had a dubbed version in Andhra. He has done straight Telugu films ‘Soorya Puthrulu’ (1996) and ‘Railway Coolie’ (1998) and gave an outstanding performance in K.Vishwanath’s film ‘Swathi Kiranam’ (1992).
Mohanlal never showed much interest in doing other language films, but he played the lead in Mani Rathnam’s ‘Iruvar’ (1997) and ‘Pop Corn’ (2003). His Bollywood entry in ‘Company’ (2002) and ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’ (2007) was noticed. Mohanlal’s major success in Tamil was with Kamal Haasan in ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’ (2009) and ‘Jilla’ (2014) with Vijay, but his sensational success in a neighboring state happened with ‘Janatha Garage,(2016) the Telugu film that grossed 140 crores. Mohanlal was also a part of commercial and critical acclaimed Kannada film ‘ Maithri’ and Telugu film ‘Manamantha’
Dulquer made his Tamil debut with the bi-lingual ‘Vaayai Moodi Pesavum’ (2014) and with Mani Rathnam’s ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’ (2015), he was recognized as a star in Tamilnadu as well as Andhra/Telangana region and was appreciated even by Bollywood celebrities. Now Dulquer is in talks with big directors or his next neighboring state films.
Nivin Pauly’s box office days started with the Alphonse Puthren starrer ‘Neram’ that was a success in both Tamil as well as Malayalam. Later his Malayalam blockbuster ‘Premam ‘ became a sensation in Tamilnadu as well as it completed 254 days in Chennai. Now Nivin is keenly concentrating on Kollywood projects hoping to ride on 2 industries simultaneously.
The Handsome Prithviraj was already created news as the most happening star of South India long time back. His Tamil forey with ‘Kana Kandaen’ (2005), ‘Parijatham’ (2006), ‘Mozhi’ (2007) was a success. Recently he done ‘Kavya Thalaivan’ (2014) in Tamil again. He also made everyone notice him in Bollywood with ‘Aiyyaa’ (2012) and ‘Aurangzeb’ (2013). Now Prithvi is doing ‘Naam Shabana’ in Bollywood.
Rahman is one actor who had a large fan following in all South Indian languages. His wrong career moves brought his market down and once again he is trying his luck with some films as leading man in Tamil that can make or break him. Recently he was a part of the successful Tamil films ’36 Vayadhinile’ and ‘Kuttrame Thandanai’. Now he is playing the leading roles in upcoming Tamil films ‘Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru’ and ‘Oru Mugathirai’
Shankar was a huge star of both Malayalam and Tamil films of 80’s. He played the leading man in more than 25 Tamil films and most of them were a success. Infact we was too busy and rejected many films like ‘Kilinjalgal’ that went to Mohan and became a super hit as well. Shankar’s most known tamil film are ‘Oru Thalai Ragam’ (1980) and ‘Kadhal Enum Nadhiyinile’ (1989). Later Shankar acted in ‘Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthen’ (2007) and directed ‘Manal Naharam’ (2015), but both didn’t helped him at box office.
Jayaram might be the most luckiest Malayalam actor of Kollywood as he was a part of many Tamil hits. His combination with Kamal Haasan is well known to all. His ‘Thuppakki’ with Vijay was a blockbuster and now Jayaram has made his Telugu debut with ‘Bhagmati’ starring Anushka Shetty and Aadhi. Jayaram is playing the antagonist in this big budget fantasy.
Suresh Gopi is another actor who has created a fan base in other states with his action films. Even though most of his action films were dubbed in Tamil and Telugu, he has done only a few straight Tamil & Telugu films. He played the same role in the Hindi and Kannada versions of New Delhi; with the title as ‘Anthima Theerpu’ and New Delhi respectively.
Later he played Ajiths brother in the blockbuster ‘ Dheena ‘ and played lead in Tamil films along with Sarath Kumar in ‘Maanasthan’ and ‘Samasthaanam’. His Telugu entry happened with ‘Aa Okkadu’ and recently he was appreciated as the cunning villain of Shankar’s Vikram starrer ‘I’.
